The future of the Harbor Community Church property in Midtown Ventura will be the focus of a meeting Tuesday with city officials.

The Midtown Ventura Community Council is hosting the meeting for residents to give their input on what the city should do with the property at 3100 Preble Ave. it purchased for $2.3 million to settle a lawsuit with the church.

The meeting will take place from 6 to 7 pm in Cooper Hall at Grace Church, 65 MacMillan Ave.

City officials are looking for input from residents before going to the City Council, which will decide the fate of the property adjacent Blanche Reynolds Elementary School. The City Council is expected to review its options at a meeting later this month.

Among the options being considered include a neighborhood market, townhouses, four single-family residential units, lease or sell the building as-is, demolish and sell the property, offer the property to the district for a school expansion or convert the church to a community center or a park.

Harbor Missionary Church currently rents the building for $3,000 a month and the rental agreement ends in June. As part of the settlement with the city, the church closed down its Operation Embrace program to feed the homeless and to move out of the city. Residents had complained of problems with homeless people and increased crime in the neighborhood, which spurred the city to take action.

Public Works Manager Brad Starr will lead Tuesday’s special meeting and provide the input from residents to the City Council.
